What is my metabolism?
Your metabolism is generally defined as the sum of all the complex chemical reactions occurring throughout your mind and body required for life.
In essence, your metabolism is an indicator of your life-energy or your proclivity toward health or disease.
Your metabolism is not just fast or slow!
A fast or slow metabolism is a generalized categorization. As such, it is incomplete.
The complexity of your metabolism is based on many factors that ultimately results in your metabolism being fast, slow, or equally important, out of synchronization.
In an effort to keep this page short, we explain 8 metabolic sub-types in “metabolic synchronization.” In addition, the proclivities for potential health problems that you may experience at some time is revealed in metabolic trends.
Your metabolism provides many indicators of how well your mind and body are functioning. A few of these indicators include:
- Your nervous system dominance (sympathetic/parasympathetic)
- Your endocrine gland dominance (sympathetic/parasympathetic)
- Your immune system dominance (humoral/cellular)
- Your digestive system efficiency (stomach pH, microflora, etc.)
- Your nutritional status (imbalances – excesses and deficiencies)
- Your emotional stability (positive/negative dominance)
- Your mind/body balance (homeostasis)
What other factors may affect my metabolism?
Today, some of the more common factors include:
- Air and water quality
- Nutrition – poor food choices (fast, refined, processed, sugar, and other junk foods)
- Toxins (includes toxic elements, chemical toxins, and metabolic toxins)
- Stress (currently dominates every socioeconomic strata)
- Medications (includes prescription and over-the-counter – drug induced nutritional deficiencies)
- Genetics (including metabolic inborn errors)
- Improper dietary supplement consumption (arbitrary and unquantified)
These are common factors and very difficult to avoid. In fact, you may recognize a few of these factors in your life.
Why should I be concerned about my metabolism?
As mentioned earlier, your metabolism may reveal your proclivity for health or disease. On our website, we refer to this as inferred potentials or metabolic trends. We use both terms synonymously.
As you know, people with a very fast metabolism are usually a Type A personality with a seemingly endless amount of energy. They are highly motivated, gregarious, stress-seekers, perfectionists, and love being the center of attention. They don’t require designer coffee or other stimulants such as the plethora of energy drinks flooding the market – they run on adrenaline.
As such, if you have a “true” fast metabolism, you are more susceptible toward metabolic disorders and diseases commonly associated with the fast metabolism.
On the other hand, you may have a “true” slow metabolism. This is usually associated with the Type B personality and is normally associated with a lack of energy, motivation, depression, and so on. You probably drink designer coffee and spend money on numerous energy drinks and products to get you through the day. In this instance, you need to speed up your metabolism.
As such, if you have a “true” slow metabolism, you are more susceptible toward metabolic disorders and diseases commonly associated with a slow metabolism.
Can I change my metabolism?
Yes.
The best place to begin a metabolic change is too accurately test your metabolism using nutritional screenings. Keep in mind, your metabolism influences your nutritional status and your nutritional status influences your metabolism. As such, optimal nutrition specific to your specific nutrient needs is one of the most efficient means to speed up or slow down your metabolism.
In essence, all essential nutrients can be categorized as either stimulatory (i.e., sodium, potassium, vitamin A, B3, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, etc.) or sedative (i.e., calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, B2, glycine, taurine, etc.). As such, if your stimulatory nutrients are dominant or excessive you tend to experience more energy. On the other hand, if your sedative nutrients are dominant or excessive you tend to experience low energy.
Please realize that optimal nutrition is not the magic bullet for metabolic changes. Your current lifestyle habits are equally important as well. As such, there may be times when you need to make major changes in your life. For example, if you are extremely stressed, you will need to reduce or better yet, eliminate those stressors. This may require extreme measures you are not willing to make. Keep in mind, a debilitating disease will force you into making these changes.
Note: It is important to realize that many factors beyond your diet influences nutrient (stimulatory/sedative) dominance. Many of these factors were mentioned earlier; however, your limbic system (i.e., amygdala, hypothalamus, pituitary, HPA-axis, HPTA-axis, etc.) are controlling factors heavily influencing nutrient dominance.
What is my metabolic objective?
On our analysis, this is revealed as a Metabolic Type Slow 1 with individual element levels at a more optimal level and the significant levels close to there acceptable levels. Metabolically speaking, your objective is to achieve a natural and dynamically balanced metabolism.
Natural simply implies you do not need consume stimulants or sedatives to achieve your natural energy levels. If you are a fast metabolism running on adrenaline, your natural energy will not be at the same high-intensity levels you currently experience. On the other hand, if you are a slow metabolism, your natural energy level will feel like a tremendous improvement. Either way, your natural energy level is your most healthy level.
Dynamically balanced simply implies your metabolism should be capable of oscillating back and forth between a fast and slow metabolism as needed. This continuous process naturally happens throughout your day. This is truly balancing your life.
Keep in mind, changing your metabolism is not an instant process nor is it necessarily easy. It is a day-by-day building process. The truth is; it may require years to accomplish your goal. Remember, almost everything in your life, including your metabolism, is the result of your lifelong choices.
